Introduction

The purpose of the study is to learn more about Sjögren's syndrome, a disease that affects about 1-4 million Americans. It is more common in women and mainly affects the glands that produce saliva and tears, leading to dry eyes and dry mouth. Sjögren's syndrome can range from a relatively mild disease to a more severe form also affecting other organs, such as skin, nerves, joints, kidneys, lungs, lymph nodes, and blood vessels, and can show up as moderate-to-severe fatigue or low-grade fevers. Patients with Sjögren's syndrome are also at a higher risk of developing certain types of lymphoma (a cancer of the immune cells). The cause of Sjögren's syndrome is unknown, but inflammation plays an important role in this disease.
